Given the recent quarantine time we live in, social distances, and so on, we have chosen a number passages of two words that we will cover in this edition of Right on!.

 

Can you guess what the first word is?

 

Right, the word vacation.

​

Why this word? Because there have been many comments about these situations we are in now, especially in this day and age. Some say they feel like they are on vacation behind closed doors.

Ohters says they always wanted to have a vacation as soon as possible, but now they want to get back to work as they used to.

 

Others say that there is no more money for holidays this year, even in their own country. And that if they went on vacation, that would not be the same because of the social distance etc.

It is therefore remarkable that the word "vacation" no longer seems to have a very pleasant connotation.

 

That made us curious to know the origin of the word vacation.

The origin of the word "vacation" is said to be Anglo-French. This is a type of French that they spoke in England in the Middle Ages. And this is derived from the Latin vacātiōn-, vacātiō which means dispensation from work, suspension of work. Those words can be connected with the word vacāre which means emptiness, you are free, you have free time.

The definition of the word continued to evolve, meaning "free from all work and worry."

 

Today it means: a period when you are not at home or at the office. A time to travel and recreate.

Hmmm, interesting, isn't it?

It's as if things have changed overnight.

 

 

Now let's talk about the other word that ironically also has some connotations with the word "vacation." Take a look at below:

Muchu mas ku esunnan bieu den e otro klasnan, b’a chèk? Mi no tabata dje mal alumno ei na skol. Mi tabata stima mi ‘Nederlans’, ‘Enkels’.  Ata di spañó ‘ni de hablá’.

I'm sure you've already guessed what word I'm going to talk about now.

 

Yes, you are right. The word 'school'

 

We can say that these two words, vacation and school, are almost always considered anthonyms. If you don't believe me, ask someone, a child, a teenager, or even an adult. When there is school, there is no vacation, and when there is vacation, there is usually no skol.

 

What is particularly remarkable nowadays is that it seems that many people are nostalgic about school. They want to go back to school. Or rather, many people now see the importance of school much more clearly.

In the past, we could  hear especially children and teenagers saying they wanted the schoolyear to be over soon so that the holidays could begin. But because of the new conditions that the whole world is facing right now, where they ask people to stay at home, stay safe, keep social distances, and where possible to even work from home and to be taught at home, many people want to get out of there homes to go to school (the same can be said about wanting to get out to go to work).

 

Where does the word school come from?

The word school is derived from the Greek word 'σχολή meaning 'leisure time'. In the past you had to have "free time" to be able to follow your education. Because most people and also children used to spend all their time working. That's why you had to take time off to go to school or to have lessons.

​

The irony between the words "school" and "vacation" is that you can almost say that the meaning of these words is twisted. Or rather, the feelings associated with these two words.

 

It is interesting to see how long these feelings will last. Whether it is something we can consider temporary, or if these effects will be for a longer period of time; where the fact of being able to go to school (and the same can be said for going to work) will be even more appreciated than the fact that you are largely indoors, on a so-called vacation, at home.

 

Vacation and School -> Right on!
